2 Peter Theory on Knowledge

03.6.0

As we recall from the exegesis of 2 Peter 1:5-7, we know that Knowledge/Gnosis is an outgrowth of Virtue/Arete.  We note that the 2 Peter Theory describes Knowledge as a result of problems and concerns associated with the young Christian's 'energetic evangelism'.  This outgoing approach to witnessing for Christ will result, naturally, in the young Christian being confronted by numerous other religions, problems in the community, and questions about the Church.  This was seen as leading, naturally, to an attempt to have these questions answered authoritatively.  This motivates the young Christian to listen to preachers, listen to Christian TV and radio, and read Christian books, including the Bible.  It was assumed that, as the young Christian is exposed to this wide diversity of Christian resources, he or she would inevitably be confronted by something in the Scriptures that would be used by the Spirit to convict him or her of sin.  Following this conviction, the Christian is compelled to try to remediate the problem, leading to a confrontation with the issues of Self-Control.

“He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.”  Prov 28:13
