It is hoped that, once you read and understand the Second Peter theory, you will remark to yourself: “Well, that was obvious.” If that is your reaction, I will be satisfied. The goal is not to create something new, but to highlight things you may already know. The goal is to arrange these things in such a way that they are readily recognized and the linkages between them are intuitively obvious. If this can be accomplished, then this state of affairs becomes another indication that this effort to describe Christian Spiritual Development may approach His Truth.
I would ask, in those situations that do not seem to make sense, please approach them tentatively and prayerfully. Throughout my struggles I have noted repeated instances of feeling confused and ignorant. I have found that, when I am in the middle of struggling with a personal issue, it is then that I am particularly confused. You may have also found this to be true in your life. One of the indicators that we are in such a 'time of testing' is that we are confused. If the situation was easy to comprehensively understand, we would do so quickly and the 'trials' would pass.
On the other hand, when I have not yet even begun to struggle with an issue, it is then that I am most ready to proclaim an 'answer', that later turns out to be incorrect. Then, when I have come to actually live out something of His truth, I have found that the issues have been recast and my confidence in the revised 'answer' is more robust.
Thus, if things in this presentation don't seem to 'fit' your lived experience, give them a little time, and prayer. It MAY be that some of the troubling aspects of the theory may be highlighting issues currently in your own life. IF the Second Peter theory approximates His truth, this is to be expected. Please bear with me and think about these things with an open mind. His Spirit will lead you into what you need to know.
28 "He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. 29 To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me." - Col 1:28-29 (NIV)
